Richard L. Beeston examines the piano rolls, records and radios that helped bring music into homes and everyday life.

MARIETTA, GA – November 5, 2026 – Author’s Tranquility Press presents the 2026 edition of Sound Matters: The Impact of Technology on Music Consumption in the Early Twentieth Century by Richard L. Beeston, a study of the machines and recording formats that reshaped the experience of listening.

Before pocket-sized transistor radios became common, cylinders, perforated piano rolls and revolving discs brought mechanically reproduced music into homes. Beeston follows those developments with attention to the people using them, asking how technical changes altered when, where and how music could be heard.

The book opens with accounts of two Australian events: a gramophone demonstration in Maclean in 1898 and a Sydney concert in 1900 featuring a mechanical device that played a piano. These episodes introduce a question running through the study. What happens when an unfamiliar invention becomes an ordinary part of musical life?

Beeston examines player piano rolls, sound cylinders and records before turning to microphones, amplification and radio. He considered both the formats that carried music and the machines needed to play it. The distinction matters: changes in materials, mechanisms and sound reproduction helped shape what listeners could do with the music they acquired.

Australia provides a focus. The radio chapter explores broadcasting, listening in the home, portable transistor sets and Indigenous radio. The discussion extends beyond the period named in the title to consider later developments in how audiences accessed music.

Throughout, Beeston connects technical history with the choices available to listeners. A performance could be reproduced, a recording played again, a broadcast heard at home. Familiar habits emerge from a succession of inventions, adaptations and changing expectations. The emphasis stays on the relationship between the equipment and the everyday experience of hearing music.

Appendices provide material on cylinder construction, radio station beginnings, record sizes and speeds, and the capabilities of pianists and player pianos.
